I’m not going to discuss the more obvious topics like the fact that there were more than 1000 fragile ass white people who descended upon Charlottesville, Virginia yesterday… Or about how the media covered it with safer words than have been used every time #BlackLivesMatter and other non-white groups gathered for peaceful protests… Or how the police seemed to have handled them so delicately – only arresting a total of four people and no SWAT, no tanks, or tear gas.
Nope. What I’m going to talk about right now are all of the white people who let this happen. You know, the ones who are always “shocked and appalled” that this could be happening in 2017. The ones who feel terrible but don’t want to get involved. The ones who opt out of topics about race because they’re more afraid of getting their feelings hurt than dismantling this bullshit. Yeah… you guys. Your luke-warm, stay-out-of-it approach to tough topics allowed this to fester. You know the old friend from high school who occasionally says some offensive shit so you just take care to not bring him around your black friends? He’s the one who showed up in Virginia yesterday.
Just look at these guys… they look like your co-workers, your trusted auto mechanic, your daughter’s boyfriend. They look like every mediocre ass, regular ass white man in line at Starbucks. They look like the guy at the bar sipping an IPA while discussing his favorite craft beers. How many times have you laughed off some wild shit your cousin said and tried to smooth it over by saying something like “he means well” or “eh, don’t pay him any mind?” How many times have you responded to similar racist situations with weak, safe shit like “we need love instead of hate?” Duh… we don’t need you to state the fucking obvious. We need you to grow a spine and start checking the problematic ass people in your lives. Contrary to what you might think, white people, this is YOUR problem. Get your people together! Stop hiding behind your non-fat soy lattes and SPEAK OUT!
